Getting Around Bratislava — Transport, Airports & Day Trips

Every way to get around the city and reach nearby destinations — from your feet to the airport, with our honest take on each.

Bratislava is compact: the Old Town is walkable, and getting to and from the city is straightforward. Below are the main ways to get around Bratislava and travel to nearby destinations.

Getting around the city

  • On foot — the Old Town and most central sights are within a 10–15 minute walk; from a central address you rarely need transport at all.
  • Bolt / Uber — for most visitors, the simplest option for trips outside the walkable centre: fast, affordable, ordered in the app with the price shown upfront.
  • Public transport (MHD) — Bratislava runs buses, trolleybuses and trams on one network and one ticket. A 30-minute ticket is €1.20 and a 60-minute ticket €1.80 (checked June 2026); buy via the app, ticket machines or kiosks, and validate on board. Riding an old tram or trolleybus is a small experience in itself — not every city still has them.
  • Shared e-scooters & bikes — Bolt runs shared e-scooters and e-bikes through the same Bolt app. For cycling, the city’s Slovnaft BAjk bike-share has docking stations across town (a two-day visitor pass is around €10 plus a refundable deposit, booked in its app; check there for current rates), and a few Old Town shops rent bikes and e-bikes by the hour or day.

To & from Vienna Airport (VIE)

  • Direct bus — about an hour, from roughly €5–8.
  • Private transfer — door-to-door, with a driver waiting at arrivals; the easy choice for late-night arrivals, families or groups (more below).

For a full comparison of buses, trains and transfers, see our Vienna Airport guide.

From Bratislava Airport (BTS)

  • City bus 61 — runs to the main train station (Hlavná stanica) in about 20–25 minutes; from there it’s a short walk, tram or bus into the Old Town. A standard public-transport ticket covers it.
  • Bolt / Uber — both operate from the airport, with pickup points shown in the app — the simplest door-to-door option.
  • Private transfer — we can arrange a pickup for guests (see our Private Transfers page).

Day trips & nearby destinations

  • Vienna — the train runs from Vienna’s main station in about 56 minutes (roughly hourly), with frequent buses too. In the warmer months the Twin City Liner catamaran also runs along the Danube, worth booking ahead. A common option is to travel one way by boat and return by train.
  • Budapest — about 2.5 hours by train or bus.
  • Devín Castle — bus 29 from under the SNP Bridge (~25 min) or a Bolt; a transfer or van suits a group. See it in our things to do.
  • Parndorf outlet (Austria) — about 30 minutes by car; on Saturdays a shopping shuttle runs from Eurovea and Petržalka.

Private transfers & van — for our guests

For airport pickups, day trips, or a larger group, we arrange private transfers and a van for guests staying at the apartment — a fixed price agreed in advance, arranged through your Airbnb chat. Full details on our Private Transfers page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car in Bratislava?

Usually not. Most visitors explore the centre on foot and use Bolt or Uber, or public transport, when they need it.

What’s the easiest way to get around the city?

For short hops, Bolt or Uber; for the centre itself, your feet. Public transport is cheap and reliable for the wider city.

Do I need to book a transfer in advance?

For airport transfers, a few days’ notice is usually enough; earlier for larger groups, child seats or peak dates.

Is a transfer better than a taxi for airport runs?

The main advantage is that the price is agreed in advance and the driver waits if your flight is delayed.

Can you do a late-night Vienna Airport pickup?

Yes; the driver tracks the flight and waits if you’re delayed.
