Vienna Airport to Bratislava

The direct bus takes under an hour and is usually the most affordable option. Here’s every way to do it.

The simplest and most affordable way from Vienna Airport (VIE) to Bratislava is the direct bus: 40–60 minutes, from around €5–8, with several departures every hour. Vienna’s airport is only about 50 km from Bratislava — closer to Bratislava’s centre than to some parts of Vienna itself — which is why many of our guests fly into Vienna even when their destination is Bratislava.

We’ve hosted travellers in Bratislava’s Old Town since 2019, and “how do I get there from Vienna Airport?” is the single most common question we get. This is the complete answer.

It’s worth knowing that Bratislava effectively has two airports: its own — Bratislava Airport (BTS) — has many direct low-cost routes across Europe and is about 20 minutes from the city centre, and when a flight there doesn’t suit, Vienna Airport (VIE) is just about 45 minutes away by road. Few cities this size give you that much choice on arrival.

What we’d do: take the direct bus, or — for a late arrival, a family, or a group with luggage — book a private transfer in advance. The train via Vienna’s main station is the scenic long way round from the airport.

The direct bus — the option most travellers take

Flixbus & Slovak Lines (also RegioJet)

Direct buses leave straight from the airport’s bus platforms — follow the “Bus” signs from arrivals. Between the operators there are dozens of departures a day, including early-morning and late-night services, so even awkward flight times are usually covered. Buy tickets in the Flixbus or Slovak Lines app; boarding takes two minutes.

Where the bus stops in Bratislava: the two usual stops are Most SNP (the bridge right under the Old Town — get off here for the centre) and Nivy bus station (the main station inside a shopping centre, ~20 minutes’ walk or a short ride from the Old Town). Some Slovak Lines services also continue to the main train station.

Local tip: if you’re staying in the Old Town, choose a bus that stops at Most SNP — from there you walk into the historic centre in minutes. Our own guests at Suché mýto are about a 15-minute walk (or one short bus hop) from that stop.

Train — possible, but rarely worth it from the airport

There’s no direct train from the airport to Bratislava. You’d first take the S-Bahn or railjet into Vienna’s main station, then the hourly REX train to Bratislava (56 minutes). Two details worth knowing:

The REX runs on two routes — one via Marchegg to Bratislava hlavná stanica (the main station, north of the Old Town) and one via Kittsee to Bratislava-Petržalka (south of the river). Both stations are a short ride or walk from the centre, so take whichever departs first. Tickets are around €12–18 — check the ÖBB or ZSSK app for exact fares.

The train makes sense if you’re coming from central Vienna after a few days there, or if you’re on a rail pass. Arriving at the airport with luggage? Take the bus — it’s direct, cheaper and faster door to door.

Taxi, private transfer, Bolt and Uber

Pre-booked private transfers are arranged in advance for a fixed fare, agreed before you travel. For a family with small children, a late-night arrival, or four people splitting the fare, that’s money well spent — the driver waits in arrivals with a name sign.

Bolt and Uber both operate from Vienna Airport (pickup near Terminal 3 — follow the ride-hailing signs). Prices to Bratislava are dynamic, so check the app before deciding; with no surge they tend to undercut a classic taxi from the rank.

Which option for which traveller?

Best for families with kids

A pre-booked transfer if the budget allows (car seats can be requested in advance), otherwise the bus — it’s direct, and kids generally find the double-decker more fun than a train change in Vienna.

Best for groups

For four or more people splitting a ~€70–90 transfer, the per-person cost becomes much more reasonable — and you get a door-to-door ride with the luggage. For bigger groups, two cars or the bus.

Best late at night

Check the bus apps first — late-night and early-morning departures are usually available. If nothing matches your landing time, Bolt/Uber or a pre-booked transfer is the reliable fallback.

Best with lots of luggage

The bus handles luggage fine (it goes in the hold), but a transfer takes you exactly door to door — worth it if you’re hauling ski bags or a month of suitcases.

Arriving in Bratislava — the last mile

From Most SNP, the Old Town starts directly across the street. From Nivy bus station or either train station, a Bolt across town costs a few euros, or public transport runs frequently (a 30-minute ticket is €1.20). If you’re staying with us: from Most SNP it’s a short walk along the Danube and up into the Old Town to Suché mýto — with the apartment’s smart-lock self check-in, it doesn’t matter how late your bus gets in.

How far is Vienna Airport from Bratislava?

About 50 km — under an hour by road. Vienna Airport is the nearest major international airport to Bratislava after Bratislava’s own airport (BTS).

Do I need to book the bus in advance?

For normal weekdays, buying in the app an hour ahead is usually fine. For Friday evenings, weekends and holiday periods, book a day or two ahead — the cheap fares sell first.

Is there a border control between Austria and Slovakia?

Both countries are in the Schengen area, so there’s normally no passport check on the way — the bus doesn’t even slow down at the old border.

Can I fly into Bratislava directly instead?
